About Us

A quarter century of healing and hope

Since 1999, RCTV Memoria has been the only center in Moldova providing comprehensive rehabilitation for victims of torture, violence, and inhuman treatment.

Our History

From a pilot project to Moldova's lifeline

Rehabilitation Center for Torture Victims "Memoria" (RCTV Memoria) is a non-profit, apolitical, and independent institution. As the first and so far the only comprehensive rehabilitation center for victims of torture and inhuman and/or degrading treatment in Moldova, RCTV Memoria was founded on November 12, 1999, and registered at the Ministry of Justice on December 7, 1999.

RCTV Memoria started with a pilot project for 6 months, implemented from March 27 to September 27, 2000. The project was part of the "Regionalization Program" of IRCT (International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims), financially supported by the European Commission.

Annual rehabilitation projects mainly aimed at providing comprehensive services for survivors of torture, inhuman and/or degrading treatment, other forms of violence, and for their families, were implemented in the period 2000 to 2018.

A particularly successful experience was the project "Medical Rehabilitation Centers for Torture Survivors in Central Europe," implemented from January 2001 to June 2002 in partnership with similar centers in Romania, Poland, and Hungary, coordinated by ICAR Foundation.

An important international experience was the PATH (Partners in Trauma Healing) project, initiated by the Center for Victims of Torture (CVT) and funded by USAID. The project involved 10 rehabilitation centers worldwide over 5 years (2011-2015).

More recently, RCTV Memoria has expanded its work to include support for Ukrainian refugees and victims of gender-based violence in Moldova, with the support of UN Women, Church World Services, and other international partners.
